Lone Star Limericks - July 1-22
The O. Henry Museum in Austin is currently taking submissions for the 2nd annual Limerick competition celebrating (or gently mocking) anything about Austin or Texas.
“Two categories will be available: Youth (ages 12 & under) and General (ages 13 & up). Submissions can be formatted as a video, image, or text. Submissions will close at 11:59pm on July 22, 2023. From July 23-July 31, the public will be able to view a gallery of all submissions and vote for their favorite limericks. Winners will be announced on August 1. Winners (in each category, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places, as well as two honorable mentions) will receive a Texas-themed prize package.”

Austin Chicano Huelga Oral History Workshop - July 22, 10am-1pm - Terrazas Branch of Austin Public Library
Preservation Austin and the Austin History Center welcome community members to this oral history workshop for individuals who participated in or have memory of Community Activism during the 1970s Chicano Movement in East Austin.
Participants will learn how to conduct oral histories for their families and friends, with an option to sign up and be interviewed about their experiences during this time in Austin’s history.

Texas Book Festival and The Library Foundation have curated a series of events with notable Texas authors “in conversation.” All events are free and open to the public, but you reserve your spot here. These events fill up fast, so don’t miss out!
Terrance Hayes is a MacArthur Foundation Fellow and the author of So to Speak, a powerful and timely new collection of poems, and the brilliant essay collection Watch Your Language (Penguin). Roger Reeves is the winner of the Griffin Poetry Prize and the author of the groundbreaking essay collection Dark Days: Fugitive Essays (Graywolf).
Books will also be available for sale from Black Pearl Books.

7th Annual Mermaid Capital of Texas Fest – Mermaid Promenade & Downtown Street Faire! - September 23, 10am-7pm
The Mermaid Society of San Marcos is a conservation group that centers both environmental education work for the local aquifer and spring, and San Marcos’ history with the mermaid theme park, Aquarena Springs. The festival is a three week, multi-event celebration and education effort that ends with the Mermaid Promenade & Downtown Street Faire! Get ready for great costumes, food, arts and crafts, and lots of mermaid fun!
